Medical-Related Psychiatric Conditions
Studies have shown a link between mental health and physical health. Not only do people with serious mental conditions have a higher risk of experiencing chronic physical conditions, but people with chronic medical conditions are also more prone to experiencing depression and anxiety.
High blood sugar levels caused by some chronic medical conditions can lead to a disruption in the circulation of blood that can impact the functions of the brain. Any disability caused by the medical or mental conditions not only cause patients to develop depression and anxiety, but it can also isolate them from social support, lead to increased food intake, increased weight gain, and further worsening of their physical condition. Food cravings and decreased energy levels have been commonly reported in patients with mental and physical illnesses.
A significant number of patients with mental illness also have diabetes. Depression and schizophrenia increase the risk for the development of type 2 diabetes because of insulin resistance in those patients. Along with diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol levels are rampant, as well as antipsychotic drugs causing increased weight gain. On the flip side, diabetic patients are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness, experiencing depression, anxiety, and emotional stress.
Many other medical conditions can contribute to the need for psychiatric treatment. Mara Fiorentino, M.D., strives to help patients balance their mental and health issues in the best possible way.
